چکیده

The comonotonic additivity axiom has been applied successfully in behavior under risk and uncertainty, and in an other-regarding setting it suggests that preferences over two allocations are independent of the payoffs of unaffected players as long as both allocations generate the same rank order of payoffs. If other-regarding preferences satisfy comonotonic additivity and violate standard additivity, however, the resulting utility specification captures all other-regarding attitudes in a set of coefficients that are rank-dependent but not player-dependent. Consequently, comonotonic additivity may be too strong and is only appropriate when players are anonymous and have no shared history. JEL CLASSIFICATION: C72, D81

Fair Social Orderings with Other-Regarding Preferences

We study the fair division of a one dimensional good when individuals have other-regarding preferences. Assuming no legitimate claims, we ask how society should rank all possible allocations for every profile of ordinal preferences. In both a model of average and positional externalities, we characterize a class of social preferences which satisfy appealing efficiency and equity properties. The...

Partial Ranking by Incomplete Pairwise Comparisons Using Preference Subsets

In multi-criteria decision making the decision maker need to assign weights to criteria for evaluation of alternatives, but decision makers usually find it difficult to assign precise weights to several criteria. On the other hand, decision makers may readily provide a number of preferences regarding the relative importance between two disjoint subsets of criteria. We extend a procedure by L. V...

Coalescing, Event Commutativity, and Theories of Utility

Preferences satisfying rank-dependent utility exhibit three necessary properties: coalescing (forming the union of events having the same consequence), status-quo event commutativity, and rank-dependent additivity. The major result is that, under a few additional, relatively non-controversial, necessary conditions on binary gambles and assuming mappings are onto intervals, the converse is true....

Other-Regarding Preferences with Player-Dependent Coefficients

Using a system of axioms, this paper develops a general utility model of other-regarding preferences when opponents are unfamiliar, but they are not strictly anonymous in the sense that they may share some history. Based on two key axioms, an individual’s preferences over a vector of probability distributions are additively separable in the decision maker’s own outcome and each opponent’s outco...

‘‘I can do perfectly well without a car!’’ An exploration of stated preferences for middle-distance travel

This article presents the results of a study exploring travellers’ preferences for middle-distance travel using Q-methodology. Respondents rank-ordered 42 opinion statements regarding travel choice and motivations for travel in general and for car and public transport as alternative travel modes. By-person factor analysis revealed four distinct preference segments for middle-distance travel: (1...
